Fiction

I offer three primary services for fiction writers: Manuscript Critique, Line Editing, and Copyediting. Or, as I like to call them, Step 1, Step 2, and Step 3.

Step 1, or Manuscript Critique, answers the question, Is the story good? Does it have a beginning, middle, and end? Is the character’s journey interesting? Does the main character grow and/or change in some fashion? Are there any plot holes?

Step 2, or Line Editing, answers the question, Is the writing good? Has the author overused (or misused) any pet phrases? Is there a nice variety of sentence structures and lengths? Have the character’s eyes changed color from blue to green?

Step 3, or Copyediting, answers the questions, Are the i’s dotted and the t’s crossed? This is the last pass before you submit your manuscript to a larger audience.

I find the steps a useful way of talking about my services. You are welcome to pick and choose which services you like and choosing Step 1 does not lock you into also choosing Steps 2 and 3. Consider where you are with your manuscript and what you most need right now. If you aren’t sure, just send me an e-mail and we’ll talk.

After I got over the first few traumatic bouts of it [your editing], I realized you are quite good at it. I wouldn't call your editing mean, but the aggressive honesty does feel akin to being hit over the head with a mace in a very constructive manner. I will not lie, it leaves you dazed for a bit. --Monica White

Just wanted to personally thank you for putting up with me so positively. You look for the good and with my very fragile self-esteem it is very much appreciated! --Rebecca Bryan
